I kind of figure that it will be necessary to be able to turn this thing off fairly quickly and easily.

A hefty chunk of copper or bronze, shaped like a double-axe, could be applied across the terminal crowns to short out the circuit instantly. This would stop the thing dead in its tracks but what might happen when the connection is nearly made is anybody's guess...
