Zak, In 1970/71 I got to know David Bowie since he was a local lad (I wasn't a fan - I just happened to live with his ex-girlfriend Mary Finnegan) and when he asked me "what did I want to do with my musical talent?", I replied that I never saw myself as star but rather would like to get involved perhaps with children's TV.

I had played him the first demo that I ever did of the song "Wilfred Whale" (which he thought would be a commercial hit if properly recorded) and told him that I was keen to put any money that I made from commercial music into antigravity research (I was a real UFO nut). His reply to that was that I was a very clever man and shouldn't ever be afraid of stardom or "hide my light" but should, instead aim for the top, the absolute top and aim to be a shining, shining star.

A couple of days later he called to say that he'd written a song inspired by our conversation: "There's a Star Man, waiting in the skies.. he'd like to come and meet us but he thinks he'd blow our minds; He told me, let the children boogie..."

He sat at the old grand piano in his (large even then) house and played me that song, while Angela, his then lady brought in the ice creams and tea. He gave me a really beautiful book; "Arthur Rackham's book of pictures", which I have to this day. So now you know where that one came from: "Starman"... Speak soon, steve.
